Most of us feel anxious from time to time. However, some people struggle with anxiety disorders, which can be frightening, frustrating, and sometimes disabling. This is especially an addiction issue. Those struggling with anxiety and addiction need a dual diagnosis treatment program to address both conditions simultaneously. Fortunately, at United Recovery Project’s detox center, we offer dual diagnosis treatment to address and provide anxiety and addiction treatment.
If you or a loved one suffers from anxiety and a substance use disorder, our dual diagnosis treatment can help. Contact us today at 833.525.0166.
What Is Dual Diagnosis?
Dual diagnosis treatment addresses when an individual has a co-occurring disorder, which means that the patient has an underlying mental illness and substance use disorder. This includes anxiety disorders. People dealing with a dual diagnosis often struggle more to get sober because they have an underlying mental health issue that complicates their addiction. Oftentimes, people with anxiety disorders feel so anxious and agitated that they seek either prescription or illegal substances to calm themselves down.
Because the substances that are sought out are addictive, the initial calm may soon wear off, causing the patient to need the substance again and again. Often the patient will need more and more of the substance to calm their anxiety. This creates a cycle of anxiety and addiction that is difficult to break on one’s own.
What Is Involved In Anxiety And Addiction Treatment?
Anxiety and addiction treatment in our dual diagnosis program is first dealt with through detox. At United Recovery Project’s detox center, we take a holistic approach to treating dual diagnoses. This means that we treat the individual’s whole, not just what’s immediately wrong with them or only their addiction. Our anxiety treatment program in Florida focuses on using several types of detox therapy programs to treat anxiety. These include, but are not limited to the following:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy
- Traditional talk therapy
- Group therapy
- Family therapy
- Creative therapies, like music therapy and art therapy
- Equine therapy
All of these different therapies have their benefits, and we work closely with our patients to help them figure out which would be best for them.
Sometimes, anxiety treatment programs also involve medications. This is common in more severe cases of anxiety disorders. However, some of these medications can be addictive and therefore abused, so we try to limit the use of medications like benzodiazepines (Klonopin and Xanax are two examples). Instead, we use our therapies to treat a dual diagnosis patient.
